Named organic reactions: interactive simulation

Each named reaction is a short sequence. Play the frames rather than memorising only the product: the reagent, the intermediate and the carbon-count change are what the exam asks.

Useful for: JEE Main, JEE Advanced, NEET, CBSE Boards

Try this

  1. 1

Play Hoffmann bromamide to the last frame.

    What you should see

The amine has one carbon fewer than the amide. That carbon left as carbonate.

  2. 2

Play haloform with the iodine case in mind.

    What you should see

A methyl ketone gives a yellow solid, CHI₃.

Formulas behind it

Hoffmann product

RCONH2→RNH2(one carbon fewer)RCONH_2 \rightarrow RNH_2 \quad (\text{one carbon fewer})

Common mistakes

  • Using Friedel–Crafts on aniline. The Lewis acid complexes with the nitrogen and the ring is deactivated.

FAQ

Why does Gabriel synthesis give only a primary amine?

The nitrogen in phthalimide has only one site left for the alkyl group.
