Question 153 of 180

A 16Ω16\Omega wire is bend to form a square loop. A 9V9V battery with internal resistance 1Ω1\Omega is connected across one of its sides. If a 4μF4\mu F capacitor is connected across one of its diagonals, the energy stored by the capacitor will be x2μJ\dfrac{x}{2}\mu J, where x=x=______.

Show answer and solution

Answer: 81

Under the balanced state, there is no flow of charge through the capacitor. So, the path connecting the capacitor behaves as an open path.

The equivalent resistance of the entire circuit, under equilibrium condition, can be calculated as follows:

Req=1+114+4+4+14Ω=(1+3)Ω=4Ω\begin{matrix}{R}_{eq} & = & 1+\dfrac{1}{\dfrac{1}{4+4+4}+\dfrac{1}{4}}\Omega \\ & = & \left(1+3\right)\Omega \\ & = & 4\Omega \end{matrix}
Hence, the current through the entire circuit is given by

I=VReq=94A\begin{matrix}I & = & \dfrac{V}{{R}_{eq}} \\ & = & \dfrac{9}{4}A\end{matrix}
So, the current
(I1)\left({I}_{1}\right) can be written as
I1=94×416A=916A\begin{matrix}{I}_{1} & = & \dfrac{9}{4}\times \dfrac{4}{16}A \\ & = & \dfrac{9}{16}A\end{matrix}
The potential difference between the points
AA and BB is,
VA−VB=I1×8=916×8=92V\begin{matrix}{V}_{A}-{V}_{B} & = & {I}_{1}\times 8 \\ & = & \dfrac{9}{16}\times 8 \\ & = & \dfrac{9}{2}V\end{matrix}
Hence, the energy stored in the capacitor is given by

U=12C(VA−VB)2=12×4×814μJ=812μJ\begin{matrix}U & = & \dfrac{1}{2}C{\left({V}_{A}-{V}_{B}\right)}^{2} \\ & = & \dfrac{1}{2}\times 4\times \dfrac{81}{4}\mu J \\ & = & \dfrac{81}{2}\mu J\end{matrix}
∴x=81∴x=81
