Question 179 of 276

A particle of charge −16×10−18-16 \times 10^{-18} coulomb moving with velocity 10 ms−110 \mathrm{~ms}^{-1} along the x\mathrm{x}-axis enters a region where a magnetic field of induction B\mathrm{B} is along the y\mathrm{y}-axis, and an electric field of magnitude 104 V/m10^4 \mathrm{~V} / \mathrm{m} is along the negative z-axis. If the charged particle continues moving along the x\mathrm{x}-axis, the magnitude of B\mathrm{B} is

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 103 Wb/m210^3 \mathrm{~Wb} / \mathrm{m}^2

Since there is no deviation in the path of the charged particle, so net force due to presence of electric and magnetic field must be zero ⇒vB=qE⇒B=EV=10410=103 Wb/m2\Rightarrow \mathrm{vB}=\mathrm{qE} \Rightarrow \mathrm{B}=\frac{\mathrm{E}}{\mathrm{V}}=\frac{10^4}{10}=10^3 \mathrm{~Wb} / \mathrm{m}^2
