Question 222 of 276

Two wires AA & BB are carrying currents I1{I}_{1} and I2{I}_{2} as shown in the figure. The separation between them is dd . A third wire CC carrying a current II is to be kept parallel to them at a distance xx from AA such that the net force acting on it is zero. The possible values of xx are:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) x=±I1d(I1−I2)x=\pm \dfrac{{I}_{1}d}{\left({I}_{1}-{I}_{2}\right)}

As current in AA and BB are opposite in direction, net force on CC can never be zero if it is kept between
AA and BB .

∴μ0I1I2πx=μ0II22π(x±d)∴ \dfrac{{\mu }_{0}{I}_{1}I}{2\pi x}=\dfrac{{\mu }_{0}I {I}_{2}}{2\pi \left(x\pm d\right)}
I1(x±d)=I2x{I}_{1}\left(x\pm d\right)={I}_{2} x
(I2−I1)x=±I1d\left({I}_{2}-{I}_{1}\right)x=\pm {I}_{1} d
x=±I1dI2−I1x=\pm \dfrac{{I}_{1} d}{{I}_{2}-{I}_{1}}
