Question 267 of 276

Two magnetic dipoles XX and YY are placed at a separation dd , with their axes perpendicular to each other. The dipole moment of YY is twice that of XX . A particle of charge qq is passing through their mid-point PP , at angle θ=45o\theta ={45}^{o} with the horizontal line, as shown in figure. What would be the magnitude of force on the particle at that instant? ( dd is much larger than the dimension of the dipole)

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 00

BX=2(μ04π)Md/2{B}_{X}=2\left(\dfrac{{\mu }_{0}}{4\pi }\right)\dfrac{M}{d/2} along xx -axis
BY=μ04π(2M)(d/2){B}_{\text{Y}}=\dfrac{{\mu }_{0}}{4\pi }\dfrac{\left(2M\right)}{\left(d/2\right)} along yy -axis
BX=BY{B}_{\text{X}}={B}_{Y}
Hence
Bnet{B}_{net} will be at 45o{45}^{o} from xx -axis.
Now, velocity and magnetic field are in same direction. Hence no force will act on the particle.
