Question 269 of 276

A uniform magnetic field BB of 0.3T0.3T is along the positive Z\text{Z} -direction. A rectangular loop (abcdabcd) of sides 10cm×5cm10cm\times 5cm carries a current II of 12A12A. Out of the following different orientations which one corresponds to stable equilibrium?

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C)

U=−M⃗⋅B⃗=−MBcos⁡θU=-\vec{M}\cdot \vec{B}=-MB\cos \theta

For stable equilibrium potential energy should be minimum and
τ=0\tau =0

Umin=−MBwhenθ=0∘{U}_{min}=-MBwhen\theta =0^{\circ}
⇒cos⁡⁡θ=1\Rightarrow \cos ⁡\theta = 1

⇒\RightarrowM⃗andB⃗\vec{M}and\vec{B} are on same direction.
