Question 120 of 192

The height of liquid column raised in a capillary tube of certain radius when dipped in liquid AA vertically is, 5cm5cm. If the tube is dipped in a similar manner in another liquid BB of surface tension and density double the values of liquid AA, the height of liquid column raised in liquid B would be ______ mm.

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 0.050.05

The height hh through which a liquid will rise in a capillary tube of radius rr is given by,
h=2Tcos⁡θrρg∝Tρ∝2T2ρh=\dfrac{2T\cos \theta }{r\rho g}\propto \dfrac{T}{\rho }\propto \dfrac{2T}{2\rho }
As we can see in both cases, value of height will remain same. Therefore,

h′=h=5cm=0.05m{h}^{'}=h=5cm=0.05m
