Question 6 of 142

A transverse harmonic wave on a string is given by y(x,t)=5sin⁡(6t+0.003x)y\left(x,t\right)=5\sin \left(6t+0.003x\right) where xx and yy are in cmcm and tt in sec⁡\sec. The wave velocity is _________ ms−1m{s}^{-1}.

Show answer and solution

Answer: 20

The general equation for a wave can be written as y=Asin⁡(ωt+kx)y=A\sin \left(\omega t+kx\right). Comparing it with the given equation, y=5sin⁡(6t+0.003x)y=5\sin \left(6t+0.003x\right),
ω=6rads−1\omega =6rad{s}^{-1}, k=0.003cm−1k=0.003{cm}^{-1}
Using the equation,
v=ωkv=\dfrac{\omega }{k}
v=60.003×102=20ms−1v=\dfrac{6}{0.003\times {10}^{2}}=20m{s}^{-1}
