Question 134 of 165

An electromagnetic wave in vacuum has the electric and magnetic fields E⃗\vec{E} and B⃗\vec{B}, which are always perpendicular to each other. The direction of polarization is given by X⃗\vec{X} and that of wave propagation by k→\overrightarrow{\mathrm{k}}. Then :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) X⃗∥B⃗\vec{X} \| \vec{B} and k⃗∥E⃗×B⃗\vec{k} \| \vec{E} \times \vec{B}

Direction of polarization is parallel to magnetic field,
∴X→∥B→\therefore \quad \overrightarrow{\mathrm{X}} \| \overrightarrow{\mathrm{B}}
and direction of wave propagation is parallel to
E→×B→\overrightarrow{\mathrm{E}} \times \overrightarrow{\mathrm{B}}
∴K→∥E→×B→\therefore \quad \overrightarrow{\mathrm{K}} \| \overrightarrow{\mathrm{E}} \times \overrightarrow{\mathrm{B}}
