Mechanical Properties of Solids

JEE Main level, single correct, medium

5 of 118

Question 5 of 118

Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R
Assertion (A) : Steel is used in the construction of buildings and bridges.

Reason (R) : Steel is more elastic and its elastic limit is high.

In the light of above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) Both AA and RR are correct and RR is the correct explanation of AA

The relationship between Young's modulus, stress, and strain is:
stressstrain=Y\dfrac{stress}{strain}=Y
Since the elastic modulus of steel is more, for the same amount of stress, the strain will be less resulting in less deformation of buildings and bridges. Therefore, steel is used for construction of large structures.

Hence, both assertion and reason are correct and the reason correctly explains the assertion.
