Question 21 of 308

As shown in the figure, a particle is moving with constant speed πms−1\pi m{s}^{-1}. Considering its motion from AA to BB, the magnitude of the average velocity is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 1.53ms−11.5\sqrt{3}m{s}^{-1}

The given data is

v=πms−1v=\pi m{s}^{-1}
By using trigonometric ratios in the triangle shown above the displacement can be found out by

sin⁡60∘=AB2R⇒AB=R3\sin 60^{\circ}=\dfrac{AB}{2R} \Rightarrow AB=R\sqrt{3}
The formula for distance is

d=vt⇒t=dv⇒t=120∘360∘×2πRπ=2R3d=vt \Rightarrow t=\dfrac{d}{v} \Rightarrow t=\dfrac{120^{\circ}}{360^{\circ}}\times \dfrac{2\pi R}{\pi }=\dfrac{2R}{3}
So, the average velocity is

vavg=3R2R3=332{v}_{avg}=\dfrac{\sqrt{3}R}{\dfrac{2R}{3}}=\dfrac{3\sqrt{3}}{2}
=1.53ms−1=1.5\sqrt{3}m{s}^{-1}
