Question 63 of 308

A ball is thrown vertically up (taken as +z−axis+z-axis ) from the ground. The correct momentum-height (p−h)(p-h) diagram is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C)

If the ball was thrown with initial velocity uu , then its velocity at height ′h′'{h}^{'} can be written as.
v=u2−2ghv=\sqrt{{u}^{2}-2gh}
Its linear momentum,
p=mv=mu2−2ghp=mv=m\sqrt{{u}^{2}-2gh}
Or
p2=m2u2−2m2gh{p}^{2}={m}^{2}{u}^{2}-2{m}^{2}gh
The graph between
p&h will be a parabola.
In motion when particle was going up, its velocity is positive and decreasing with height and so is the linear momentum. When it reaches the maximum height, the velocity and linear momentum will be zero. Again, it will start to fall back, the velocity and linear momentum will increase but will have negative value.
