Question 111 of 308

Two stones are thrown up simultaneously from the edge of a cliff 240m240m high with an initial speed of 10ms−110m{s}^{-1} and 40ms−140m{s}^{-1} respectively. Which of the following graph best represents the time variation of the relative position of the second stone with respect to the first? (Assume stones do not rebound after hitting the ground and neglect air resistance, take g=10ms−2g=10{ms}^{-2})(the figure are schematic and not drawn to scale)

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D)

S1=10t−12gt2{S}_{1}=10t-\dfrac{1}{2}g{t}^{2}. When S1=−240{S}_{1}=-240⇒t=8s\Rightarrow t=8s. So, at t=8t=8 seconds first stone will reach the ground. S2=40t−12gt2{S}_{2}=40t-\dfrac{1}{2}g{t}^{2}. Till t=8st=8s, S2−S1=30t{S}_{2}-{S}_{1}=30t. But after 8s8s S1{S}_{1} is constant =−240=-240. Relative to stone 11 for (t1>8)s{t}_{1}\gt 8)s displacements of stone 22 , S2+240{S}_{2}+240. And at t=12st=12s seconds stone will reach the ground. The corresponding graph of the relative position of second stone with respect to first is,
