Question 166 of 308

When a ball is dropped into a lake from a height 4.9m4.9m above the water level, it hits the water with a velocity vv and then sinks to the bottom with the constant velocity vv. It reaches the bottom of the lake 4.0s4.0s after it is dropped. The approximate depth of the lake is

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 29.4m29.4m

Using
s=ut+12at2s=ut+\dfrac{1}{2}a{t}^{2}
Initially,
u=0u=0, so time taken to reach from AA to BB is t=2sg=2×4.99.8=1st=\sqrt{\dfrac{2s}{g}}=\sqrt{\dfrac{2\times 4.9}{9.8}}=1s
Now, using
v2=u2+2as{v}^{2}={u}^{2}+2as, we have
v=2gh=2×9.8×4.9=9.8ms−1v=\sqrt{2gh}=\sqrt{2\times 9.8\times 4.9}=9.8m{s}^{-1}
∵t2=(4−1)s=3s∵{t}_{2}=\left(4-1\right)s=3s
∴d=t2×v=3×9.8=29.4m∴d={t}_{2}\times v=3\times 9.8=29.4m
