Question 253 of 308

The water is filled up to a height of 12m12m in a tank having vertical sidewalls. A hole is made in one of the walls at a depth hh below the water level. The value of hh for which the emerging stream of water strikes the ground at the maximum range is _____ mm.

Show answer and solution

Answer: 6

R=2gh×(12−h)×2gR=\sqrt{2gh}\times \sqrt{\dfrac{(12-h)\times 2}{g}}
4h(12−h)=R\sqrt{4h(12-h)}=R
For maximum
RR
dRdh=0\dfrac{dR}{dh}=0
⇒h=6m\Rightarrow h=6m
