Question 267 of 308

The position of a projectile launched from the origin at t = 0 is given by r⃗=(40i⁡^+50j⁡^)m\vec{\text{r}}=\left(40\hat{i⁡}+50\hat{j⁡}\right)\text{m} at t = 2s. If the projectile was launched at an angle θ\theta from the horizontal, then θ\theta is (take g = 10 ms-2).

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) tan−174{\text{tan}}^{-1}\dfrac{7}{4}

From question, Horizontal velocity (initial),

ux=402=20m/s{u}_{x}=\dfrac{40}{2}=20m/s
Vertical velocity (initial),
50=uyt+12gt250={u}_{y}t+\dfrac{1}{2}g{t}^{2}
⇒50=uy×2+12(−10)×4\Rightarrow 50={u}_{y}\times 2+\dfrac{1}{2}(-10)\times 4
50=2uy−2050=2{u}_{y}-20
uy=702=35m/s{u}_{y}=\dfrac{70}{2}=35m/s
∴tan⁡θ=uyux=3520=74∴\tan \theta =\dfrac{{u}_{y}}{{u}_{x}}=\dfrac{35}{20}=\dfrac{7}{4}
⇒\Rightarrow θ=tan⁡−174\theta ={\tan }^{-1}\dfrac{7}{4}
