Question 115 of 295

A ray of light of intensity I\mathrm{I} is incident on a parallel glass slab at point A\mathrm{A} as shown in diagram. It undergoes partial reflection and refraction. At each reflection, 25%25 \% of incident energy is reflected. The rays AB\mathrm{AB} and A′B′\mathrm{A}^{\prime} \mathrm{B}^{\prime} undergo interference. The ratio of Imax⁡\mathrm{I}_{\max } and Imin⁡\mathrm{I}_{\min } is :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 49:149: 1

From figure
I1=I4I_1=\frac{I}{4} and I2=9I64I_2=\frac{9 I}{64}
⇒I2I1=916\Rightarrow \frac{I_2}{I_1}=\frac{9}{16}
By using
Imax⁡Imin⁡=(I2I1+1I2I1−1)2\frac{I_{\max }}{I_{\min }}=\left(\frac{\sqrt{\frac{I_2}{I_1}}+1}{\sqrt{\frac{I_2}{I_1}}-1}\right)^2
=(916+1916−1)2=491=\left(\frac{\sqrt{\frac{9}{16}}+1}{\sqrt{\frac{9}{16}}-1}\right)^2=\frac{49}{1}
