Rotational Motion

JEE Main level, single correct, medium

Question 49 of 280

Moment of inertia of a square plate of side ll about the axis passing through one of the corner and perpendicular to the plane of square plate is given by:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 23Ml2\dfrac{2}{3}M{l}^{2}

Use parallel axis theorem to get the magnitude of the moment of inertia of a square plate of side
ll about the axis passing through one of the corners and perpendicular to the plane of a square plate,
Iz=Icm+M(l2)2{I}_{z}={I}_{cm}+M{\left(\dfrac{l}{\sqrt{2}}\right)}^{2}
⇒Iz=Ml26+Ml22=4Ml26=2Ml23\Rightarrow {I}_{z}=\dfrac{M{l}^{2}}{6}+\dfrac{M{l}^{2}}{2}=\dfrac{4M{l}^{2}}{6}=\dfrac{2M{l}^{2}}{3}.
