Question 65 of 280

Shown in the figure is a hollow ice-cream cone (it is open at top). If its mass is MM, radius of its top is RR and height, HH, then its moment of inertia about its axis is

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) MR22\dfrac{{MR}^{2}}{2}

It can be assumed as several parts of discs having different radius, so

I=∫dl=∫dm(r2)I=\int dl=\int dm\left({r}^{2}\right)
From diagram

ry=tan⁡θ=RH\dfrac{r}{y}=\tan \text{θ}=\dfrac{R}{H}
r=RH⋅yr=\dfrac{R}{H}\cdot y
dm=ρ(πr2)dydm=\text{ρ}\left(\text{π}{r}^{2}\right)dy
From equation (i), (ii) and (iii)

I=MR22I=\dfrac{M{R}^{2}}{2}
