Question 115 of 280

If force F⃗=3i^+4j^−2k^\vec{F}=3\hat{i}+4\hat{j}-2\hat{k} acts on a particle having position vector 2i^+j^+2k^2\hat{i}+\hat{j}+2\hat{k} then, the torque about the origin will be:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) −10i^+10j^+5k^-10\hat{i}+10\hat{j}+5\hat{k}

Torque in vector form is expressed as vector multiplication of position vector and force.
τ⃗=r⃗×F⃗\vec{\tau }=\vec{r}\times \vec{F}
⇒τ⃗=∣i^j^k^21234−2∣\Rightarrow \vec{\tau }=\left|\begin{matrix}\hat{i} & \hat{j} & \hat{k} \\ 2 & 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 & -2\end{matrix}\right|
⇒τ⃗=(−2−8)i^−(−4−6)j^+(8−3)k^\Rightarrow \vec{\tau }=\left(-2-8\right)\hat{i}-\left(-4-6\right)\hat{j}+\left(8-3\right)\hat{k}
⇒τ⃗=(−10i^+10j^+5k^)Nm\Rightarrow \vec{\tau }=\left(-10\hat{i}+10\hat{j}+5\hat{k}\right)Nm
