Question 98 of 190

A gas is compressed adiabatically, which one of the following statement is NOT true?

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) There is no change in the internal energy

In adiabatic process,
∆Q=0∆Q=0 and ∆U≠0∆U\neq 0
Using the first law of thermodynamics,
∆Q=∆U+W∆Q=∆U+W
⇒∆U=−W(Wis the work done by the gas,so−Wwill be the work done on the gas)\Rightarrow ∆U=-W\left(W\text{is the work done by the gas},\text{so}-W\text{will be the work done on the gas}\right)
As the gas is compressed

W<0W\lt 0
Therefore,
∆U>0∆U\gt 0 and hence ∆T>0∆T\gt 0.
