Question 129 of 191

A parallel beam of monochromatic light of wavelength 600 nm600 \mathrm{~nm} passes through single slit of 0.4 mm0.4 \mathrm{~mm} width. Angular divergence corresponding to second order minima would be ______ ×10−3rad\times 10^{-3} \mathrm{rad}.

Show answer and solution

Answer: 6

sin⁡θ≃θ≃2λb\sin \theta \simeq \theta \simeq \frac{2 \lambda}{b}
=2×600×10−94×10−4=3×10−3rad=\frac{2 \times 600 \times 10^{-9}}{4 \times 10^{-4}}=3 \times 10^{-3} \mathrm{rad}
Total divergence
=(3+3)×10−3=6×10−3rad=(3+3) \times 10^{-3}=6 \times 10^{-3} \mathrm{rad}
