Question 136 of 191

Given below are two statements :
Statement I : If the Brewster's angle for the light propagating from air to glass is
θB{\theta }_{B}, then Brewster's angle for the light propagating from glass to air is π2−θB\dfrac{\pi }{2}-{\theta }_{B}.
Statement II : The Brewster's angle for the light propagating from glass to air is
tan⁡−1(μg){\tan }^{-1}\left({\mu }_{g}\right), where μg{\mu }_{g} is the refractive index of glass.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Statement I is true but Statement II is false.

Applying Snell's law, we get

μasin⁡i=μgsin⁡(90∘−i){\mu }_{a}\sin i={\mu }_{g}\sin \left(90^{\circ}-i\right)
tan⁡i=μgμa\tan i=\dfrac{{\mu }_{g}}{{\mu }_{a}}
When going from glass to air

tan⁡i′=μaμg=cot⁡i\tan {i}^{'}=\dfrac{{\mu }_{a}}{{\mu }_{g}}=\cot i
Clearly,
i′=(π2−i){i}^{'}=\left(\dfrac{\pi }{2}-i\right) & hence Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
