Question 1 of 4

If vectors a⃗=i^+j^+k^\vec{a} = \hat{i} + \hat{j} + \hat{k}, b⃗=i^−j^+2k^\vec{b} = \hat{i} - \hat{j} + 2\hat{k} and c⃗=xi^+j^−k^\vec{c} = x\hat{i} + \hat{j} - \hat{k} are coplanar, then xx is equal to:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) −13-\frac{1}{3}

Coplanar   ⟺  [a⃗ b⃗ c⃗]=0\iff [\vec a\,\vec b\,\vec c] = 0: ∣1111−12x1−1∣=1(1−2)−1(−1−2x)+1(1+x)=3x+1=0  ⟹  x=−13\begin{vmatrix} 1 & 1 & 1 \\ 1 & -1 & 2 \\ x & 1 & -1 \end{vmatrix} = 1(1-2) - 1(-1-2x) + 1(1+x) = 3x + 1 = 0 \implies x = -\frac{1}{3}.
