Unweighted GPA (4.0 scale)

3.50

Weighted GPA

3.88

Honors +0.5 · AP/IB +1.0

  1. 1

    Turn each letter grade into grade points (4.0 scale)

    AP Calculus: A = 4 · English 11: B+ = 3.3 · Honors Chemistry: A- = 3.7 · US History: B = 3

  2. 2

    Multiply by credits and add (quality points)

    4×1+3.3×1+3.7×1+3×1=144\times1 + 3.3\times1 + 3.7\times1 + 3\times1 = 14
  3. 3

    Unweighted GPA = quality points ÷ credits

    GPA=144=3.50\text{GPA} = \frac{14}{4} = 3.50
  4. 4

    Weighted GPA: add +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB on passing grades

    Weighted=5×1+3.3×1+4.2×1+3×14=3.88\text{Weighted} = \frac{5\times1 + 3.3\times1 + 4.2\times1 + 3\times1}{4} = 3.88

Uses the common US 4.0 scale (A+ = A = 4.0). Schools differ — some give A+ 4.3 or weight only C or better — so check your school’s policy.

FAQ

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale for every class. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes — commonly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB — so it can go above 4.0.

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add these quality points, and divide by the total credits.

Does every school use the same scale?

No. This tool uses the common scale (A+ = A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 …). Some schools give A+ a 4.3 or use different boosts, so check your school’s policy.
