Question 3 of 6

The term independent of xx in the expansion of (x+1x)10\left( x + \frac{1}{x} \right)^{10} is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 10C5^{10}C_5

General term Tr+1=10Crx10−r(x−1)r=10Crx10−2rT_{r+1} = ^{10}C_r x^{10-r} (x^{-1})^r = ^{10}C_r x^{10-2r}. For independent of xx, 10−2r=0  ⟹  r=510-2r = 0 \implies r=5. Coefficient is 10C5^{10}C_5.
