Gravitation

JEE Main level, single correct, medium

Question 1 of 223

At what height hh above the Earth's surface does the acceleration due to gravity become g9\frac{g}{9}, where RR is the radius of Earth?

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2R2R

We have g′=g(RR+h)2=g9  ⟹  RR+h=13  ⟹  R+h=3R  ⟹  h=2Rg' = g \left( \frac{R}{R+h} \right)^2 = \frac{g}{9} \implies \frac{R}{R+h} = \frac{1}{3} \implies R+h = 3R \implies h = 2R.
