Question 164 of 190

In a series LRLR circuit with XL=R{X}_{L}=R, power factor is P1{P}_{1}. If a capacitor of capacitance CC with XC=XL{X}_{C}={X}_{L} is added to the circuit the power factor becomes P2{P}_{2}. The ratio of P1{P}_{1} to P2{P}_{2} will be :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1:21:\sqrt{2}

In case of LRLR circuit:

Given:
XL=R{X}_{L}=R
P1=cos⁡ϕ=RZ=RR2+(XL)2=12{P}_{1}=\cos \phi =\dfrac{R}{Z} =\dfrac{R}{\sqrt{{R}^{2}+{\left({X}_{L}\right)}^{2}}} =\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}
In case of
LCRLCR circuit:

P2=cos⁡ϕ=RZ=RR2+(XL−XC)2=1{P}_{2}=\cos \phi =\dfrac{R}{Z} =\dfrac{R}{\sqrt{{R}^{2}+{\left({X}_{L}-{X}_{C}\right)}^{2}}} =1
Therefore,

P1P2=1:2\dfrac{{P}_{1}}{{P}_{2}}=1:\sqrt{2}
