Question 174 of 190

The primary side of a transformer is connected to 230V,50Hz230V,50Hz supply. The turn ratio of primary to secondary winding is 10:110:1. Load resistance connected to the secondary side is 46Ω46\Omega. The power consumed in it is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 11.5W11.5W

The voltages associated with the primary and the secondary side of the transformer are related to the turn ratio as follows:
V1V2=N1N2...(1)\dfrac{{V}_{1}}{{V}_{2}}=\dfrac{{N}_{1}}{{N}_{2}}...\left(1\right)
From equation (1), it follows that

230V2=101\dfrac{230}{{V}_{2}}=\dfrac{10}{1}
V2=23V{V}_{2}=23V
Hence, the power consumed can be calculated as follows

P=V22R=23×2346=11.5W\begin{matrix}P & = & \dfrac{{V}_{2}^{2}}{R} \\ & = & \dfrac{23\times 23}{46} \\ & = & 11.5W\end{matrix}
