Question 22 of 239

If one were to apply the Bohr model to a particle of mass ′m′'m' and charge ′q′'q' moving in a plane under the influence of a magnetic field 'B', the energy of the charged particle in the nth{n}^{th} level will be:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) n(hqB4πm)n\left(\dfrac{hqB}{4\pi m}\right)

For a charge qq moving in a uniform magnetic field BB

fm=mv2R{f}_{m}=\dfrac{m{v}^{2}}{R}

qVB=mv2RqVB=\dfrac{m{v}^{2}}{R}

⇒mv2=qVBR\Rightarrow m{v}^{2}=qVBR

⇒12mv2=qVBR2\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{2}m{v}^{2}=\dfrac{qVBR}{2}

⇒Energy=qVBR2(1)\Rightarrow Energy=\dfrac{qVBR}{2}(1)

By Bohr's quantization condition,

Angular momentum
L=nh2πL=n\dfrac{h}{2\pi }

⇒mvR=nh2π\Rightarrow mvR=\dfrac{nh}{2\pi }

⇒vR=nh2πm(2)\Rightarrow vR=\dfrac{nh}{2\pi m}(2)

Put
(2)(2) in (1)(1)

⇒Energy=qB2(nh2πm)\Rightarrow Energy=\dfrac{qB}{2}\left(\dfrac{nh}{2\pi m}\right)

=qBnh4πm=\dfrac{qBnh}{4\pi m}
