Question 124 of 239

Find the ratio of energies of photons produced due to transition of an election of hydrogen atom from its(i) second permitted energy level to the first level, and (ii) the highest permitted energy level to the first permitted level.

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 3:43:4

Energy of an electron in the nth{n}^{th} orbit of a Hydrogen atom is given by, En=−13.6n2eV{E}_{n}=\dfrac{-13.6}{{n}^{2}}eV
Therefore,

⇒E2−E1E∞−E1=13.6(1−14)13.6=34\Rightarrow \dfrac{{E}_{2}-{E}_{1}}{{E}_{\infty }-{E}_{1}}=\dfrac{13.6\left(1-\dfrac{1}{4}\right)}{13.6}=\dfrac{3}{4}
