Atoms & Nuclei

JEE Main level, single correct, medium

Question 146 of 239

As an electron makes a transition from an excited state to the ground state of a hydrogen-like atom/ion

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) its kinetic energy increases but potential energy and total energy decrease

U=−e24πϵ0rU=-\dfrac{{e}^{2}}{4{\pi \epsilon }_{0}r}, UU== potential energy, K=e24πϵ0rK=\dfrac{{e}^{2}}{4{\pi \epsilon }_{0}r}
KK=kinetic energy. E=U+K=−e28πϵ0rE=U+K=-\dfrac{{e}^{2}}{8{\pi \epsilon }_{0}r}, EE=total energy∴∴ As electron de-excites from an excited state to ground state, KK increases, but UU and EE decrease.
