Question 138 of 200

The threshold wavelength for photoelectric emission from a material is 5500A∘5500A^{^{\circ}}. Photoelectrons will be emitted, when this material is illuminated with monochromatic radiation from a
A.
75W75W infra-red lamp
B.
10W10W infra-red lamp
C.
75W75W ultra-violet lamp
D.
10W10W ultra-violet lamp
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) C and D only

Given here, threshold wavelength λth=5500A˚=550nm{\lambda }_{th}=5500Å=550nm
For photoelectric emission, the wavelength of the light should be less than
550nm550nm.
Wavelength of infrared radiation extends from
700nm−1mm700nm-1mm and that of ultraviolet radiation is 100−400nm100-400nm.
Since, UV light has less wavelength than
550nm550nm, so only UV would be able to emit photoelectrons.
