Electromagnetic Waves

JEE Main level, single correct, medium

36 of 165

Question 36 of 165

Given below are two statements:
Statement I: Electromagnetic waves carry energy as they travel through space and this energy is equally shared by the electric and magnetic fields.

Statement II: When electromagnetic waves strike a surface, a pressure is exerted on the surface.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Electromagnetic wave carries energy shared equally in magnetic and electric field which is given by, =12ϵ0E2=B22μ0=\dfrac{1}{2}{\epsilon }_{0}{E}^{2}=\dfrac{{B}^{2}}{2{\mu }_{0}}, as E=cBE=cB and c2=1μ0ϵ0{c}^{2}=\dfrac{1}{{\mu }_{0}{\epsilon }_{0}}.
Also, Electromagnetic wave carries momentum and therefore exerts force when it strikes a surface.
