Question 20 of 70

If 5050 Vernier divisions are equal to 4949 main scale divisions of a travelling microscope and one smallest reading of main scale is 0.5mm0.5mm the Vernier constant of travelling microscope is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 0.01mm0.01mm

The number of divisions on the vernier scale =50=50
Main scale division
(MSD)=0.5mm(MSD)=0.5mm
As,
5050 divisions on the vernier scale coincide with 4949 divisions on the main scale,
VSD=4950MSDVSD=\dfrac{49}{50}MSD
The minimum inaccuracy in the measurement of distance by a vernier scale,

== Least count of the vernier scale
=1MSD–1VSD=1MSD–1VSD
=1MSD−4950MSD=1MSD-\dfrac{49}{50}MSD
=150MSD=150×0.5mm=\dfrac{1}{50}MSD=\dfrac{1}{50}\times 0.5mm
=0.01mm=0.01mm.
