Question 29 of 70

The one division of main scale of vernier callipers reads 1mm1mm and 1010 divisions of Vernier scale is equal to the 99 divisions on main scale. When the two jaws of the instrument touch each other the zero of the Vernier lies to the right of zero of the main scale and its fourth division coincides with a main scale division. When a spherical bob is tightly placed between the two jaws, the zero of the Vernier scale lies in between 4.1cm4.1cm and 4.2cm4.2cm and 6th{6}^{th} Vernier division coincides with a main scale division. The diameter of the bob will be _____ 10−2cm{10}^{-2}cm.

Show answer and solution

Answer: 412

Given,
1MSD=1mm1MSD=1mm
10VSD=9MSD10VSD=9MSD
Then,
1VSD=910MSD=0.9MSD1VSD=\dfrac{9}{10}MSD=0.9MSD
Least count of Vernier calliper is L.C.
=0.1mm=0.01cm=0.1mm=0.01cm
Positive zero error
=0.4mm=0.4mm =0.04cm=0.04cm
Observed reading of diameter of spherical bob
=4.1cm+6×0.01=4.16cm=4.1cm+6\times 0.01=4.16cm
Real reading of diameter of bob
=4.16−0.04=4.12cm=4.16-0.04=4.12cm =412×10−2cm=412\times {10}^{-2}cm
