Question 133 of 168

A flask contains Hydrogen and Argon in the ratio 2:12:1 by mass. The temperature of the mixture is 30∘C30^{\circ}C. The ratio of average kinetic energy per molecule of the two gases (KargonKhydrogen)\left(\dfrac{{K}_{argon}}{{K}_{hydrogen}}\right) is: (Given : Atomic Weight of Ar=39.9Ar=39.9)

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 11

The formula to calculate the average kinetic energy per molecule of a gas at any temperature TT is given by
Kavg=32kBT{K}_{avg}=\dfrac{3}{2}{k}_{B}T
where,
kB{k}_{B} is Boltzmann constant.
From above equation, it can be concluded that the average kinetic energy per molecule is independent of the molecular weight of the gas.

Hence, the required ratio is
1:11:1.
