Question 90 of 210

Two bodies of masses m1=5kg{m}_{1}=5kg and m2=3kg{m}_{2}=3kg are connected by a light string going over a smooth light pulley on a smooth inclined plane as shown in the figure. The system is at rest. The force exerted by the inclined plane on the body of mass m1{m}_{1} will be : [Take g=10ms−2g=10m{s}^{-2}]

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 40N40N

The forces acting on two masses are shown below.
Here,
NN is normal to the incline and tension TT along the string up the incline. As the string and the pulley are all light and smooth, the tension in the string is uniform everywhere.

For equilibrium condition, forces should add to zero.

Thus, equating,
m2g=m1gsin⁡θ{m}_{2}g={m}_{1}g\sin \theta
⇒sin⁡θ=m2m1=35\Rightarrow \sin \theta =\dfrac{{m}_{2}}{{m}_{1}}=\dfrac{3}{5} and cos⁡θ=45\cos \theta =\dfrac{4}{5}
Normal force on
m1{m}_{1} is N=m1gcos⁡θ=5gcos⁡θN={m}_{1}g\cos \theta =5g\cos \theta
=5×10×45=40N=5\times 10\times \dfrac{4}{5}=40N
