Question 102 of 118

The bulk moduli of ethanol, mercury and water are given as 0.9,250.9,25 and 2.22.2 respectively in units of 109Nm−210^9 \mathrm{Nm}^{-2}. For a given value of pressure, the fractional compression in volume is ΔVV\frac{\Delta \mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{V}}. Which of the following statements about ΔVV\frac{\Delta V}{V} for these three liquids is correct ?

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) Ethanol >\gt Water >\gt Mercury

Compressibility =1 Bulk modulus =\frac{1}{\text { Bulk modulus }}
As bulk modulus is least for ethanol (0.9) and maximum for mercury (25) among ehtanol, mercury and water. Hence compression in volume
ΔVV\frac{\Delta \mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{V}} Ethanol >\gt Water >\gt Mercury
