Question 164 of 239

From the statements given below :
(A) The angular momentum of an electron in
nth{n}^{th} orbit is an integral multiple of hh.
(B) Nuclear forces do not obey inverse square law.

(C) Nuclear forces are spin dependent.

(D) Nuclear forces are central and charge independent.

(E) Stability of nucleus is inversely proportional to the value of packing fraction.

Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) (A), (B), (C), (E) only

(A) Electron revolves around nucleus only in those orbits for which the angular momentum is an integral multiple of h2π\dfrac{h}{2\pi }.
(B) Nuclear force does not follow the inverse square law.

(C) Nuclear forces are spin dependent but charge independent.

(D) Nuclear force is attractive in nature. It is a non central force, meaning it does not depend upon the distance between the particles but rather upon their orientation. Nuclear force is stronger if the spin is parallel; and weak if it is anti parallel.

(E) The negative value (less quantity) of packing fraction indicates that the isotope is stable. Positive value of packing fraction implies unstable (radioactive) nucleus. Also, the stability of the nucleus is inversely proportional to the value of the packing fraction.
