Question 228 of 239

Given the masses of various atomic particles mP=1,0072u{m}_{P}=1,0072 u, mn=1,0087u{m}_{n}=1,0087 u, me=0.000548u{m}_{e}=0.000548 u, mvˉ=0{m}_{\bar{v}}=0, md=2.0141u{m}_{d}=2.0141 u, where p=p=proton, n≡n\equivneutron, e≡e\equivelectron, vˉ≡\bar{v}\equivantineutrino and dˉ≡\bar{d}\equivdeuteron. Which of the following process is allowed by momentum and energy conservation :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) n+p→d+γn+p\rightarrow d+\gamma

For n+p→d+γn+p\rightarrow d+\gamma,
The mass defect,
∆m=mp+mn−md∆m={m}_{p}+{m}_{n}-{m}_{d}
⇒∆m=1.0072+1.0087−2.0141\Rightarrow ∆m=1.0072+1.0087-2.0141
⇒∆m=0.0018\Rightarrow ∆m=0.0018
⇒∆m>0\Rightarrow ∆m\gt 0
∴onlyn+p→d+γispossible∴onlyn+p\rightarrow d+\gamma ispossible
