Question 123 of 280

A stationary horizontal disc is free to rotate about its axis. When a torque is applied on it, its kinetic energy as a function of θ\theta, where θ\theta is the angle by which it has rotated, is given as kθ2k{\theta }^{2}. If its moment of inertia is II then the angular acceleration of the disc is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 2kIθ\dfrac{2k}{I}\theta

Kinetic Energy =kθ2=k{\theta }^{2}
12Iω2=kθ2\dfrac{1}{2}I{\omega }^{2}=k{\theta }^{2}
ω2=2kθ2I{\omega }^{2}=\dfrac{2k{\theta }^{2}}{I}
Differentiate both side w.r.t.
θ\theta .
2ωdωdθ=4kθI2\omega \dfrac{d\omega }{d\theta }=\dfrac{4k\theta }{I}
ωdωdθ=2kθI\omega \dfrac{d\omega }{d\theta }=\dfrac{2k\theta }{I}
α=2kθI\alpha =\dfrac{2k\theta }{I}
