Question 128 of 280

Two masses mm and m2\dfrac{m}{2} are connected at the two ends of a massless rigid rod of length l.l. The rod is suspended by a thin wire of torsional constant kk at the centre of mass of the rod-mass system (see figure). Because of torsional constant k,k, the restoring torque is τ=kθ\tau =k\theta for angular displacement θ.\theta . If the rod is rotated by θ0{\theta }_{0} and released, the tension in it when it passes through its mean position will be:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) kθ02l\dfrac{k{\theta }_{0}^{2}}{l}

When rod is rotated by angle
α,\alpha , the twist in the wire is ϕ.\phi .

angular frequency of wire,
Ω=kI\Omega =\sqrt{\dfrac{k}{I}}

angular frequency of rod,
ω=θ0.Ω\omega ={\theta }_{0}.\Omega

Max. Tension in the rod
=mω2.l3=m{\omega }^{2}.\dfrac{l}{3}

=mθ02.kI.l3,=m{\theta }_{0}^{2}.\dfrac{k}{I}.\dfrac{l}{3}, here I=ml23I=m\dfrac{{l}^{2}}{3}

=θ02kl={\theta }_{0}^{2}\dfrac{k}{l}
