Question 7 of 126

A faulty thermometer reads 5∘C5^{\circ}C in melting ice and 95∘C95^{\circ}C in steam. The correct temperature on absolute scale will be ______ KK when the faulty thermometer reads 41∘C41^{\circ}C.

Show answer and solution

Answer: 313

As per working of thermometers, X−LFPUFP−LFP=constant\dfrac{X-LFP}{UFP-LFP}=\text{constant}.
Therefore, we can write

41∘−5∘95∘−5∘=C−0∘100∘−0∘\dfrac{41^{\circ}-5^{\circ}}{95^{\circ}-5^{\circ}}=\dfrac{C-0^{\circ}}{100^{\circ}-0^{\circ}}
⇒C=3690×100=40∘C=40+273K=313K\Rightarrow C=\dfrac{36}{90}\times 100 =40^{\circ}C =40+273K =313K
