Question 88 of 126

Rods xx and yy of equal dimensions but of different materials are joined as shown in figure. Temperatures of end points AA and FF are maintained at 100∘C100^{\circ} \mathrm{C} and 40∘C40^{\circ} \mathrm{C} respectively. Given the thermal conductivity of rod⁡x\operatorname{rod} x is three times of that of rod⁡y\operatorname{rod} y, the temperature at junction points BB and EE are (close to):

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 89∘C89^{\circ} \mathrm{C} and 73∘C73^{\circ} \mathrm{C} respectively

Let [R=ℓ3KA]\left[ R = \dfrac{\ell}{3KA} \right]

[H=100−4011R2]\left[ H = \dfrac{100 - 40}{\dfrac{11R}{2}} \right] ...(1)
H=100−TBRH = \dfrac{100 - T_B}{R} .....(2)
H=TE−403RH = \dfrac{T_E - 40}{3R} .....(3)
using (1) and (2)

120=1100−11TA120 = 1100 - 11T_A
TB=89°CT_B = 89°C
using (1) and (3)

TE=73°CT_E = 73°C
