Question 104 of 126

Temperature difference of 120oC{120}^{o}C is maintained between two ends of a uniform rod ABAB of length 2L.2L. Another bent rod PQ,PQ, of same cross-section as ABAB and length 3L2,\dfrac{3L}{2}, is connected across ABAB (See figure). In steady state, temperature difference between PP and QQ will be close to:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 45oC{45}^{o}C

T1−T2=120oC{T}_{1}-{T}_{2}={120}^{o}C

We define thermal resistance

R=LKAR=\dfrac{L}{KA}

Given circuit can be reduced to

Equivalent resistance
Req=8R5{R}_{eq}=\dfrac{8R}{5}

Thermal current
i=T1−T28R5i=\dfrac{{T}_{1}-{T}_{2}}{\dfrac{8R}{5}}

TP−TQ=T1−T2(8R5)(3R5){T}_{P}-{T}_{Q}=\dfrac{{T}_{1}-{T}_{2}}{\left(\dfrac{8R}{5}\right)}\left(\dfrac{3R}{5}\right)

=38×120=45=\dfrac{3}{8}\times 120=45
