Question 1 of 311

An electric dipole of moment p⃗\vec{p} is placed in a uniform electric field E⃗\vec{E}. The torque acting on the dipole is maximum when the angle between p⃗\vec{p} and E⃗\vec{E} is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 90∘90^\circ

Torque τ⃗=p⃗×E⃗  ⟹  τ=pEsin⁡θ\vec{\tau} = \vec{p} \times \vec{E} \implies \tau = p E \sin\theta. Maximum torque occurs when sin⁡θ=1  ⟹  θ=90∘\sin\theta = 1 \implies \theta = 90^\circ.
