Question 2 of 311

Two point charges +2 μC+2\,\mu\text{C} and +6 μC+6\,\mu\text{C} repel each other with force 12 N12\,\text{N}. If each is given −4 μC-4\,\mu\text{C}, new force is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 4 N4\,\text{N} (Attractive)

New charges are −2 μC-2\,\mu\text{C} and +2 μC+2\,\mu\text{C}. Force ∝∣q1q2∣\propto |q_1 q_2|: (2×2)/(2×6)=4/12=1/3(2 \times 2)/(2 \times 6) = 4/12 = 1/3. F′=12/3=4 NF' = 12/3 = 4\,\text{N} attractive.
