Question 8 of 130

A body of mass 1000kg1000kg is moving horizontally with a velocity 6ms−16m{s}^{-1}. If 200kg200kg extra mass is added, the final velocity (in ms−1m{s}^{-1}) is:

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 55

From the conservation of linear momentum, it can be written that
Mu=(M+m)v...(1)Mu=\left(M+m\right)v...\left(1\right)
where,
MM is the initial mass, uu is the initial velocity, mm is the extra mass added and vv is the final velocity of the composition.
From equation (1), it follows that

1000×6=1200×v⇒v=5ms−11000\times 6=1200\times v \Rightarrow v=5m{s}^{-1}
