Question 95 of 130

Three objects A,BA,B and CC are kept in a straight line on a frictionless horizontal surface. The masses of A,BA,B and CC are m,2mm,2m and 2m2m respectively. AA moves towards BB with a speed of 9ms−19m{s}^{-1} and makes an elastic collision with it. Thereafter BB makes a completely inelastic collision with C.C. All motions occur along the same straight line. The final speed of CC is :

Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 3ms−13m{s}^{-1}

Collision between AA and BB

m×9=mv1+2mv2m\times 9=m{v}_{1}+2m{v}_{2} (from momentum conservation)
e=1=v2−v19e=1=\dfrac{{v}_{2}-{v}_{1}}{9}
⇒v2=6msec⁡−1,v1=−3msec⁡−1\Rightarrow {v}_{2}=6m{\sec }^{-1},{v}_{1}=-3m{\sec }^{-1}
Collision between
BB and CC

2m×6=4mv2m\times 6=4mv (from momentum conservation)
v=3ms−1v=3m{s}^{-1}
